The study presents the experimental investigation of surface grinding of superalloy Inconel 718. The grinding performance in terms of grinding force, surface roughness and surface topography were examined by conducting statistical experiments. The parameters that have been chosen as control factors are: table speed, infeed, grit size and the type of lubricant.

The results of this study proved that finish grinding of additively manufactured, nickelbased superalloys, such as Inconel 718, can be successfully employed to achieve a reduction in surface roughness of approximately 94 percent when measured parallel to the grind lines and approximately 34 percent when measured perpendicular to the grind lines.

Abstract [[abstract]]The grinding process has been investigated in the machining of Inconel 718 with GC, WA and CBN grinding wheels. The machinability discussed here includes surface roughness, dimensional accuracy, grinding force, grindingwheel wear and grindingwheel life.

Thermal damage to the Inconel workpiece during grinding is a major concern. By predicting the range of temperature and controlling the same appropriately during the grinding process, the thermal damages can be minimized. Using single step analytical models, temperature prediction during grinding .

An experimental study is reported on the grinding of a nickelbased alloy using vitrified CBN wheels. This work was motivated by switching the grinding of firtree root forms of jet engine blades from creepfeed grinding with conventional abrasive wheels to vitrified CBN wheels. The objective is to explore process limits and practical grinding parameters for judging the switch in terms of ...

EBSCOhost serves thousands of libraries with premium essays, articles and other content including Study of surface quality in machining nickelbased alloy Inconel .

Inconel is a family of austenitic nickelchromiumbased superalloys.. Inconel alloys are oxidationcorrosionresistant materials well suited for service in extreme environments subjected to pressure and heated, Inconel forms a thick, stable, passivating oxide layer protecting the surface from further attack. Inconel retains strength over a wide temperature range, attractive for high ...

Patil studied the grindability of Inconel 718 in flood cooling using the cBN wheel and found them suitable for grinding Inconel. The effect of grinding on residual stress has not been reported in the above studies [,, ]. Yao et al. investigated the effect of grinding on residual stress in Inconel 718 with flood cooling using vitrified bonded ...

Abstract. Following a brief literature review, the paper presents initial feasibility and Taguchi data on the use of CBN and diamond mounted grinding points for the grinding of Inconel 718 and Udimet 720 nickelbased superalloys.

Mar 01, 2009· Productive Grinding of Superalloys. March 1, 2009. ... stainless steel 440 at 45 percent and Inconel 718 at only 19 percent. Compounding manufacturing difficulty is the hightolerance and complex nature of many superalloy components. The shape of the parts often makes them difficult to hold securely for machining. Finally, both the alloys and ...

This study showed that carbide forming elements like titanium and niobium are affecting the machinability negatively. Carbides are hard and abrasive particles that wear down the tool inserts. It was also concluded that strength are of minor importance to machinability on fully heat treated Inconel 718 in the range tested.

study aims to investigate the effect of application of MQL technique, compared to flooding cooling, in grinding Inconel 718,in order to further contribute to the knowledge of machining this difficulttocut alloy. METHODOLOGY Experimental trials were carried out on a Mello tangential grinding .

This study has been performed in order to extend the tool life of the CBN tool in high speed machining over 100 m/min of Inconel 718. We conducted orthogonal cutting experiments on Inconel 718 with the CBN tool in a wide range of cutting speeds (20 m/min 300 m/min) in order to identify the wear mechanisms of the CBN tool in each cutting speed.
