This is a training course for all mine personnel involved in underground coal mining. The course is an overview of the major safety issues pertaining to flame cutting and welding in coal mines. It is meant to introduce hazards rather than provide indepth safety training on the many hazards present on a mine .

The environmental toll of underground mining is significant. It includes air pollution, changes in waterflow patterns, chemical and gas seepage into water supplies and soil, inaccessible fires in abandoned mines, and dramatic changes in land composition that can make the area unusable after the mining operation is done [source: Saxena]. Then there is the human toll.

Longwall mining accounts for about 50 percent of global underground mining production, while continuous mining covers about 45 percent. The company recently moved a portion of their semiautomatic welding systems to automated GMAW (MIG) welding for the bit block and pedestal assemblies produced at the Franklin plant for these mining systems.

Oct 27, 2011· In underground coal mines, mine operators should ensure that there is adequate ventilation in the mine, apply liberal amounts of rock dust, conduct frequent and thorough examinations, and be familiar with emergency procedures that prevent coalmine ignitions and explosions. During normal inspections, MSHA inspectors will distribute posters ...

• The Coal Mines (Precautions Against Inflammable Dust) Regulations 1956 set out requirements for the maintenance of incombustible matter in mine roadway dust including sampling, sample analysis, type of analysis and keeping records of analyses.

Many of Kentucky''s underground mines are less than 400 feet deep but some are as deep as 1,000 feet. Over 75 percent of the coal mined annually in Kentucky comes from underground mines. There are three types of underground mines: shaft, slope and drift. The type of underground mine developed depends on the coal seam.

Underground mines. Flooding in underground mines is usually controlled. These types of mines are not directly influenced by surface waters, so it is mainly underground water that plays a role in the flooding. One of the main reasons to let an underground mine be flooded is to avoid disulfide oxidation and thus, avoid acid mine drainage.

hazards of flamecutting and welding in underground coal mines W. D. MONAGHAN W. D. Monaghan, member SME, is general engineer with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh, PA Abstract One of the major ignition sources of ires and explosions in underground coal mines is lame cutting and welding.

Underground mining operations around the world pose similar risks to worker safety and health. Though different techniques are used to extract base metals, precious metals, nonmetallic minerals, diamonds and coal, the hazards do not differ that much. The deeper the mine, however, the greater the risk. Safety Challenges in Underground Mines

Explosion Prevention in United States Coal Mines . Jürgen F. Brune, Kenneth L. Cashdollar and R. Karl Zipf . Abstract: This paper outlines the legal standards and methods for protecting underground coal mines in the United States from explosions of methane gas and coal dust. It will discuss

One of the predominant causes of fires in underground coal mines is flame cutting and welding. These fires can lead to major events such as the explosion that occurred on January 22, 2003 in an airshaft being constructed at the McElroy mine. Six cont...

Roadway Maintenance. Whether rail or free steered transport is used, the importance of roadway maintenance cannot be stressed enough. Provided there is no floor heave, maintenance of rail is somewhat simpler and entails ensuring clearance is adequate at all times, the trackwork is securely held on the sleepers and fishplates at rail joins are tight (some mines use welded joints, often using a ...
